What is Zakat?

Obligatory Charity

The third pillar of Islam and a means of purifying one’s assets through offering charity is called Zakat. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Giving Zakat wipes away sins just as water extinguishes fire.” Allah has made giving charity an obligation for the believers to protect the vulnerable and needy in our society as well as rewarding the one paying Zakat. This act of selflessly spending in the way of Allah is one of His most loved gestures and brings a person closer to his Creator.

Why It's Important?

An Act Of Giving

Zakat is a religious obligation for Muslims who meet certain criteria and is considered important for a number of reasons, including:

  • Purification: Zakat is a way to “purify” wealth, making it legally and religiously pure. The word “Zakat” literally means “to cleanse”.
  • Social responsibility: Zakat is a way to fulfill one’s social responsibility to God.
  • Economic inequality: Zakat helps to address economic inequality by redistributing wealth.
  • Community: Zakat helps to relieve suffering and strengthen the Muslim community.
  • Five pillars of Islam: Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam.
  • Closeness to Allah: Zakat can increase closeness to Allah and Imaan.

How to calculate Your Zakat

Breaking your assets down into different categories makes the Zakat calculation process really simple.

We have broken down the calculation process into Zakatable assets (gold, silver, cash, savings, business assets etc.) and Deductible liabilities (money you owe, other outgoings due) so you can calculate the Zakat you owe easily.

The amount of Zakat you need to pay will be determined once you have calculated the value of your net assets. You then need to see whether your net assets are equal to, or exceed, the nisab threshold.

You can calculate how much Zakat to pay using our Zakat calculator.
